9. Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Stopped Worrying And Learned To Love the Bomb
Dr. Strangelove is the darkest comedy ever made and also one of the darkest films in general so there was really no choice when it came to making it in colour or black and white. The plot is a political satire that concerns the major military powers of the U.S. and Russia walking a tightrope with their foreign policy regarding mutual assured nuclear destruction and the results are absolutely insane while being very bleak. Not only was this a very bold move since it was released at the height of the Cold War but Stanley Kubrick also dared to make Dr. Strangelove incredibly funny. A sly and cynical tone of black humour runs throughout the plot of the film and the black and white nature of its appearance perfectly compliments this by allowing the bleakness of the story to be displayed in every possible way. It's also very ironic since the movie is filmed like a serious drama but features characters that are so ridiculous that watching them try to be serious is just comedic.
