10 Classic Movie Monsters That Will Haunt Your Dreams

9. Count Orlok - Nosferatu (1922)

nosferatu 300x600 A classic piece of German Expressionist film making, Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie Des Grauens, is an earlier twist on the vampire saga than Tod Browning's Dracula. The main difference between the two monsters is that Count Orlok (the monster in Nosferatu) is killed by sunlight whereas sunlight merely weakens Dracula. Dracula can create other vampires but Orlok just kills his victims. So that makes two versions of the same monster on this list, but I felt I had to include Count Orlok because he is so freaking scary and also because he was a pioneer in horror cinema - paving the way for generations of monsters to come. In Nosferatu, Count Orlok is going on a Blood drinking spree, decimating the population who blame this calamity on the plague. To defeat the monster he must be distracted by a beautiful, virtuous woman all night long. Such a lady is found but Orlok eventually gets round to some blood sucking. What he hasn't realised is that it is daylight and he is killed. Max Schreck's impressive performance as Count Orlok makes him a monster that will haunt your dreams. He is very ugly and creepy looking as opposed to Bela Lugosi's dapper Dracula. He sneaks about scaring the wits out of his prey. His appearance alone is enough to make ladies faint. Not a gentleman you would want to entertain come snooze time.
