10 Cloverfield Lane: A Complete Guide To The Viral Marketing

14. Swamp Pop

In a neat parallel to the original movie's ARG, the first step in 10 Cloverfield Lane's viral marketing came from a soda easter egg in the first trailer. Seen in the bunker is a glass bottle of Swamp Pop (mmm, tasty), which led to DrinkSwampPop.com. Unlike Slusho, this isn't a fictious brand; Swamp Pop has been in existence since 2013 and by all signs is really serving up a carbonated treat a bit more tastier than the name suggests. However, several nods to Cloverfield and other clues exist on their site and from other correspondence, which makes it seem like Paramount have got the company involved in the game. For starters, the company's slogan is "You can't drink just four!", a number away from Slusho's own catchphrase (possibly inspired by it in fact, with Bad Robot using the brand as a reverse thank you). But, bigger than that, around the time of the trailer a new product was added to the site's store: ".Long-Term Shelter Supply". Well, that's pretty fortutious, isn't it? In another case of 'too much to be a coincidence', the cost of the item was $4813.00, the same as the number on the jukebox for the trailer's song and its description mirrors a line from I Think We're Alone Now:
"This is a 15 year ration of assorted flavors, specially packaged for extended periods of dry storage€”for when there doesn't seem to be anyone around. Available by special request only."
