Sexualised screen violence has been a thorny issue in cinema ever since its inception. Generally, the censors will pass extreme violence - such as Ichi the Killer - and they will also pass pornographic-style unsimulated sex - such as 9 Songs, but mix the two together to make sexual violence and you have a brouhaha on your hands - at least in the censor's office. Rape, Torture porn, child abuse, BDSM - these are subjects that worry the censors. Everything must be made to have bad consequences and not incite the viewers to copy the activities in the movie. Generally, the artier the film, the more easy the censor treats it. I have included a wide variety of films with sexual violence in them. Some are arty, some are very low brow. Some of them show sexual violence perpetrated by a man, some of them show sexual violence perpetrated by a woman. Sometimes the films on the list are condoning sexual violence, sometimes they positively revel in it. There is a strong theme of retribution that runs through many of these films. Equally there is an air of permissiveness through other films. I would be interested in hearing your opinion on this list and your views of sexual violence on the screen in general.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
