10 Disappointing Movies That Ruined Summer 2013

9. R.I.P.D.

2013-RIPD-screen-1Did It Succeed?: $56 million worldwide gross against a $130 million budget, and 12% on Rotten Tomatoes. In case you couldn't tell, this one is DOA - a critical and commercial failure. Why It's Disappointing: Though based on the somewhat popular Dark Horse comic, R.I.P.D. was never able to escape the feeling that it was just a lame attempt to ape the success of the similarly-themed - but vastly superior - Men in Black franchise. Jeff Bridges provides some light relief with his wildly over-the-top performance, but there's not any real chemistry between him and co-star Ryan Reynolds, and most of the film's quirks - such as making the undead ghouls allergic to cumin - just feel like they were thrown in randomly for no reason at all. Oh, that and the film has some truly atrocious visual effects given the budget. An utter, utter mess of a film.
