10 Essential "Retro" Genre Movies You Have To See

5. The House Of The Devil

A creepy old house and even more sinister occupants form the core of The House Of The Devil,. Ti West's low budget homage to slasher movies and Satanic Panic horror, shot with a lo-fi graininess achieved by shooting on 16mm film. The story of college student Samantha Hughes (Jocelin Donahue) taking on a babysitting job is familiar from countless old horror movies, but The House Of The Devil stands out for its deliberate pacing and refusal to resort to some of the cheaper scare tactics often used in the genre. Instead, West aims for something which feels more like Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby. As with Beyond The Black Rainbow, The House Of The Devil takes its time to build mood and tension. establishing West as one of the most promising horror directors currently active.
