10 Failed Alternatives To Upcoming Comic Book Movies

Some missed opportunities are more painful than others.

The next few years are an exciting time for superhero movie fans: Marvel is about to end its Phase 2 in spectacular style with Age Of Ultron and Ant Man, Phase 3 kicking off with the eagerly anticipated Captain America: Civil War, The X-Men franchise is delivering three films in 2016. To top that off Warner Bros and DC are finally getting their act together with plenty of Justice League characters on the big screen, starting with Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice next year too. But despite heroes like Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Wonder Woman and the Justice League finally making it to the big screen over the next few years, it doesn't meant there haven't been attempts to realise these superheroes in cinema before. There have been countless failed projects - some more famous than others - to deliver a whole host of comic-characters to cinema audiences. This article looks at some of these failed attempts and considers what might have been; alternate takes on some big upcoming superhero films. Audiences are finally living in the day when a decent female superhero solo film is only just becoming a reality, where superhero teams are not a pipe dream. But had these failed alternate films become a reality, that dream would have happened so much earlier. Better effects, some inspired casting, the ability of studios to take the risk on less known superheroes and the intelligent foresight to create shared cinematic universes means that the wait might have been worth it. At the same time, these earlier attempts may have been just as exciting for audiences. Judge for yourself...
