10 Family-Friendly Movies With Ridiculously High Body Counts

Cinematic carnage ... for kids!

In the mid 1980s the movie industry found itself facing something of a quandary, if not quite a crisis: too many PG rated movies were featuring levels of violence that many thought was more appropriate for an R rating. At the same time, giving them an R rating would have been perhaps too harsh a judgment of the content and - more importantly - it would have cut the films off from their target audience. The solution? PG-13 was born, for better or worse. The first film to fall into this rating was Red Dawn, the Patrick Swayze movie about America under invasion, and over the next thirty years PG-13 movies would often be the most profitable rating in the industry. The way was now paved for more potential for violence in ostensibly family-friendly movies. Of course, even some PG rated movies contain plenty of violence, even if it is often of the cartoonish, bloodless variety. In fact, if you put the violence into a certain context and are careful with the manner in which you portray it you can produce a movie with a body count which can compete with the most outrageous R rated movie. The following list covers 10 family-friendly movies with astronomical body counts - next time you watch them see if you can keep track of all the deaths.
