The thing about heroes is that a lot of the time they end up being written damn near close to perfect. They’re noble, kind, and can always be counted on to do the right thing. And let’s face it: that’s kind of boring. Sure, they’re the guy you want in your corner when stuff goes down, but they’re usually not the ones you’d want to go have a drink with after the apocalypse.

So it falls to the secondary characters to bring a little spice. While the main character is the one you want to be, the sidekick is the guy you want to be your best friend. It’s not always fair, but sometimes it’s the only way to make the story work.

Here are my picks for the ten sidekicks (hero support, if you want to be politically correct about it) who are way more interesting than their more famous leading characters.

10. Guy – Galaxy Quest

Sam Rockwell Galaxy Quest

To be perfectly honest, I could have put literally any Sam Rockwell movie on this list and it would have worked. Even Moon. He’s pretty much the best actor in the world at upstaging his co-stars. It’s probably impossible for him to not be winning and charming and generally better than everyone else. Case in point: Guy.

Who is Guy, anyway? He’s not even one of the original cast, and he suffers from the most hilarious identity crisis I’ve ever seen. Because he’s a science fiction geek, and he knows what happens to the anonymous crew members who get sent out on dangerous missions. It never ends well. His genre knowledge and total lack of self-esteem make him a delight, and I can’t help but wish that the reboot of the Galaxy Quest TV show could have just been about Guy.
