10 Films The Irish Censors Hated

9. Riki-Oh (1991)

dd3d Riki-Oh is a Category III Hong Kong martial arts movie based on the Japanese manga of the same name. It is well known for its over the top violence, high camp factor and atrocious English dubbing. Riki is apparently invincible, immune to pain and has superpowers. This explains the over the top violence. He can crush a human skull to bits, deliver an uppercut so powerful it rips a man's jaw off, smack a man so hard on the back of his head that his eyeball pops out. All of this is harmless cartoonery but it riled the Irish Censors something serious and Riki-Oh was banned upon its release presumably due to its ultra high impact violence. I cannot verify if it has ever been resubmitted for classification.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
