10 Great Movie Characters Ruined By Awful CGI

George Lucas has a lot to answer for when he finally gets to Star Wars heaven and stands before St Chewie and one of his worst crimes was believing, hand-on-heart that there is no difference between a puppet and a bad CG version of a character, as long as the character is fake anyway.

That is genuinely the reductive way he excused himself for the absolute visual crime that resulted from his decision to return the famously cut Jabba The Hutt scene from A New Hope. Originally, Jabba was played by a stand-in actor, with the intention being to super-impose a stop motion character over the top, but budget constraints and concerns over how it looked led to Lucas dropping it. Jabba would then debut in Return Of The Jedi and look perfectly acceptable in puppet form.

Sadly, in 1997, Lucas went back on his first decision and decided to reinstate Jabba with a CG character drawn over Declan Mulholland. The result was absolutely diabolical and a betrayal of Jabba as he ought to look. The fact that he managed to look considerably worse than the cartoon version of the Clone Wars says a lot.
