Even from the earliest days of the silver screen in France and later Hollywood, motion pictures have astounded and attracted both fans and detractors. Often decried as not being true art, as an oil painting would be - film has had to fight to be recognised as a legitimate artistic endeavour. There is still a large amount of stigma attached to the process of studying and creating film, so much so that it is regularly trotted out as the go to "Can't Be Bothered" subject of students everywhere. There are films that counter act this argument splendidly. There are films that display remarkable control and skill, whether from the choices of the Director or the decisions made by the Director Of Photography - these films, and specifically those listed in this article, display incredible strength in terms of design and imagery. To have the courage to surround a two year undertaking in a very specific and limited colour palette, and then to have that decision improve the quality of the film rather than detract is extraordinary in itself.
