How I Met Your Mother came along at just the right time. With Friends just finishing up their ten season run, fans were anxious for the next ensemble sitcom to hit their screens, and though it wasn't quite as popular as the fan favourite Friends, HIMYM was nonetheless a widely watched, beloved comedy-drama that did a great job of playing with the genre.

Though the writers deserve credit for this, it was the core cast that solidified the show's popularity, with each of the gang giving brilliant performances.

Both during and after the show's run, the likes of Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Cristin Milioti and Neil Patrick Harris have gone from strength to strength, lending their talents to epic franchises, clever rom-coms and outrageous comedies. Josh Radnor, meanwhile, has become a indie filmmaker with a lot to offer, and Alyson Hannigan, arguably the most famous cast member going into the show, has continued her career's early winning streak with a string of solid comedies.

With that in mind, here are 10 great movies starring the How I Met Your Mother cast, from the gripping thrillers, the refreshing rom-coms and the family favourite blockbusters.

10. The Avengers (2012) - Cobie Smulders

The Avengers is the most popular movie on this list, and for good reason. With its ensemble cast led by Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, the epic superhero team-up is as fun as it is ambitious, with numerous great characters, an entertaining villain and lots of fan service.

Directed by Joss Whedon, the film stars Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, the right-hand of SHIELD Director Nick Fury (Sam Jackson).

This was Smulders' first appearance in the MCU, and despite the massive cast, she actually gets plenty of times to shine, particularly in the opening, when she attempts to chase Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and proves to be a lot more than just a one-note supporting character.

The rest of the film is an absolute blast start to finish, a blockbuster of the highest order that would eventually prove to be just the beginning of what the MCU had to offer.

Smulders reprised her role as Hill in Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Spider-Man: Far From Home, with cameos in both Infinity War and Endgame. She might not be the biggest character, but she's certainly a welcome addition, and it stands today as Smulders' best role outside of HIMYM.
