10 Greatest British Themed Romance Films

9. Sliding Doors (1998)

Starring Gwenyth Paltrow as Helen, Sliding Doors tells the story of a woman whose future depends on whether she catches the train, although she doesn't know it and the audience sees the results of both options revealed in parallel.

Before she gets to the train station, she is sacked from her job. When she arrives she runs to catch her train and we are shown two instances for the remainder of the film. If she gets the train, she meets James (John Hannah) on the tube who goes on to become a good friend and eventually a love interest. She then goes home to find her long-term boyfriend Gerry (John Lynch) cheating on her and leaves him.

If she misses the train, a delinquent attempts to mug her while she hails and taxi and she bangs her head. After visiting the hospital, she goes home where she just misses her boyfriend's lover leaving, so doesn't suspect anything and continues in the relationship, growing more suspicious.

It's a thought provoking love story of What If's, If Only's and how love can conquer all.
