When you mention movie sequels to most people, the general response is often one of sneering and contempt with phrases such as “cynical cash-in” repeated endlessly. Most of the time those people have a point. There is a never-ending conveyor belt of dreary straight-to-DVD sequels that have little to do with the original other than sharing a name and they are the lowest of the low when it comes to movie making.
Most of the time, sequels are either horror movies, superhero flicks or blockbuster action movies, as they’re the types of film with franchise potential and there’s no better way of making money in movies than churning out sequels year after year. A sequel has to expand on the original movie or else it serves no purpose, which is where most sequels fall short as they’re just lazy re-visits of the original movie with no new ideas or innovative developments.
For all the millions of awful sequels, there are a select few that are masterful. In fact, the film I consider the greatest of all time is a sequel. The ten on this list and countless others prove that not all sequels have the same artistic merit as Exorcist II: The Heretic or those hideous Transformers movies.
