10 Hilarious Movies That Were Supposed to be Serious

It's a beautiful thing when a movie is able to honestly move us, whether to make us feel sadness, fear, wonder, or what have you. Cinema is a visceral art, one that plays on our empathy in ways that no other medium can. And when a filmmaker can properly play with our emotions, the result can be transcendent catharsis. Or they could totally screw everything up and make us laugh instead. This is not a list of films that had a steady, assured hand behind them. These are movies that provoked the exact opposite of what they were going for, and have become infamous for reasons completely unintended by the filmmakers. These are the good bad films, the malformed but still utterly lovable freak-babies of the silver screen.

10. Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959)

You knew this would be here. Ed Wood is the maestro of schlock and awe, the man whom all bad filmmakers aspire to match. And this tale of aliens animating the dead is his crowning achievement. Is it truly "the worst movie ever made," as so many have dubbed it? Maybe, maybe not. Personally, I think Ed Wood's genuine desire to create good cinema in spite of his staggering ineptitude is endearing. There's a lot of love in this stupid little movie that's missing from something like, say, Transformers. That being said, all of its entertainment value still comes from the ridiculous special effects and horrendously dumb writing. http://youtu.be/oHRq80QNnJM

Dan Schindel loves movies more than you do. He considers it an accomplishment to have survived a year and counting in Los Angeles. Someday, he'll be the greatest critic in the world. He spent a year watching a documentary every day, so now he knows everything.
