When you're a teenager, the scariest thing in the world is growing up. That's the theme of Ginger Snaps, an awesome Canadian horror film full of werewolves, blood, guts, and Halloween. The movie follows two sisters who have a bizarre fascination with death and who really don't want to get older, but when Ginger begins to grow up faster than her sister, their relationship is in serious trouble.

That's not the only trouble they have to deal with, as in this case growing up also means turning into a werewolf. Ginger is bitten in the first act and slowly begins to transform, and the movie uses werewolfism as a metaphor for puberty and all the anxiety it brings to a girl's life. Ginger is one of the great female horror characters who you both root for and fear as her powers gradually slip out of control.

The entire last act is set on Halloween, mainly taking place at the school's dance. Ginger's face has transformed and her hair has turned white, but of course, everyone just thinks that's her costume. There's an incredible shot where Ginger slowly walks down the school's hallway as the lights flicker and black and orange balloons surround her on both sides, and with all this imagery that calls to mind being an adolescent on October 31st, it's a highly enjoyable and festive experience.
