If someone told you six months ago that Aquaman would end up out-grossing both Deadpool movies, you probably would've laughed in their face. And you would've been right to.

Despite their prohibitive R rating, the Ryan Reynolds-starring superhero films have proven the voracious hunger for comic book fare aimed at adults, and with Reynolds' larger-than-life personality driving both films to hugely unexpected profits, how could Jason Momoa and co. compete with it?

The answer lies in the ever-precious Chinese box office. Domestically, Aquaman has actually grossed less than both Deadpool films, but in China alone, it's grossed almost $300 million.

Meanwhile, Deadpool wasn't even granted a release in China due to its adult rating, and Deadpool 2 only recently received a Chinese release in its re-edited PG-13 format (aka Once Upon A Deadpool).

If you strip Aquaman's Chinese box office away, it'd be pretty much on par with the performance of both Deadpool movies, which is still extremely impressive.
