To suggest that Stormtroopers are idiots would be to retread very familiar ground: the white-suited mooks are the epitome of the toothless bite after all but their incompetency and lack of military skill (despite all of that specialist training they actually went through) is over-shadowed quite badly by the illogical efficiency of their useless-looking enemies.
Both the spear-wielding Ewoks and the glorified hippy Gungans are about as far from traditional warrior races as you could imagine, and yet both are able to easily despatch clone troopers and heavily armed Empire droids. So, apparently, spears are the deadliest weapons in the known galaxy, then.
How They Actually Deserved To Die
At the hands of someone with a gun perhaps? Or who wasn't simply brought in for some adorable light comic relief. Incredibly, both the Ewoks and the Gungans and particularly Jar jar Binks have a higher kill rate than Chewbacca seems to, and he's quite clearly identified as the baddest of the bad race of Wookies.
