10 Insane Reasons Movies Were Forced To Change Their Titles

9. Harry Potter Replaces 'Philosopher' With 'Sorcerer', Because It's Too "Cerebral" For American Kids

HP To be fair, this title change originated with J.K. Rowling's novel, which was called Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone in the UK, but was changed to Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone in the US for much the same reason that the film's title change stuck, because it was believed by marketing departments that the term "philosopher" was too heady for American children to understand. Instead, the term sorcerer easily connotes magic and wonder, whereas the assumption is that philosopher just makes too many people think of Rene Descartes (which is idiotic). An amusing and silly by-product of this change is that some scenes had to be re-dubbed and otherwise tweaked in post-production so that the title fit what was happening in the scenes.
