Size Doesn't Matter, Sort Of.

Each year is always filled with big budget blockbuster releases and 2017 is no different. Scattered throughout these 365 days are the standard remakes to successful movies, major comic book releases, enormous sequels, and enormous sequels to major comic book releases. There’s a new Spiderman, a new Alien movie, a new Wolverine and a Justice League movie that will inevitably fill seats. And there's also Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Kingsman 2 and even Paddington 2 - which will totally be great, to be fair.

But these, as well as many others, are the movies that everyone is and will be talking about for the foreseeable future. They demand the spotlight like an ageing Broadway star, refusing to share the limelight with any upstart types who try to elbow their way into the public eye for a little screen time.

So, with that in mind, it seems appropriate to take a look at some movies set for release in 2017 that are coming in from some way off the beaten track and are managing to create their own buzz without having a caped crusader or a giant ape or, Harry Styles, in sight.

It’s often the case that with all the crashing and banging that the triple A movies make, it’s the smaller movies that we just happen to stumble upon that we tend to love the most.

Here’s 10 smaller movies to look forward to in 2017.

10. Berlin Syndrome

Cate Shortland could not be labelled as a director who likes to churn out movies. Berlin Syndrome will be only her third full length feature since her debut with Lore way back when in 2004. We’ve had more World Cups than we have Shortland movies since then.

Still, good things come to those that are drip fed as her latest film is an adaptation of Melanie Joosten’s best seller that seems to depict the notion of wanderlust in an entirely literal sense of the word.

Lights Out’s Teresa Palmer stars in this thriller about a backpacking journalist who hooks up with a seemingly tall, dark and handsome German only for the passion to turn sinister as she is held captive by him the next morning. In fairness, the morning after a one night stand is never the easiest thing at the best of times.

The Sundance Festival looks pretty tasty this year, and Berlin Syndrome is one of the many reasons why.
