10 Lost Movies And The Absurd Places They Turned Up

1. Metropolis Original Cut - Museo Del Cine

Metropolis After the 153-minute version of Metropolis premiered in 1927, it eventually disappeared, with it being believed that roughly 25% of the longest cut was gone for good. However, in 2008, the most complete version of the film to date, running in at 148 minutes, was discovered in the archives of the Museo del Cine in Argentina - after having been in the hands of a private collector and an art foundation - albeit only after one of the museum's staff noted that they were surprised at how long the Metropolis print was. It premiered in 2010 with only 5 minutes missing, because the two scenes taking up that time were considered damaged to the point that they were unwatchable. If there's anywhere which should have been quick off the mark with realising it had possession of a prized print, it's a film museum. That it languished around with them before a staff member made an off-hand remark about the run-time is pretty damn ridiculous. Still, at least it was uncovered in the end, while countless other sure classics sit mothballed in some movie producer's laundry basket or in an actor's bag of golf clubs...
