Changing the race of characters in comic book movies is nothing new. Sometimes it generates a lot of controversy online (Idris Elba as Heimdall and Michael B. Jordan as The Human Torch for example), but it more often than not is completely ignored or unnoticed by fans who understand that these characters were created in a time when having a non-white lead character would have been a problem. What about gender swapping though? That's less common, but with comics often relegating female characters to love interest status, it's something which actually needs to happen a lot more in the near future. Throw in the fact that there really aren't all that many iconic or great female superheroes capable of holding their own on the big screen (how many can you think of after Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman?), and this is a real problem, especially as more and more moviegoers demand films with strong female leads. The answer could be to give some pre-existing heroes and villains a drastic gender makeover in order to create some. That seems to be what Marvel Studios appear to be doing after casting Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One in Doctor Strange, and that casting decision could kick the door open for similar changes to be made to even bigger characters in all the Marvel movies.
