10 Mind Meltingly Surreal Films

9. The Beyond (1981)

The Blind Lucio Fulci does surrealism. Well it is the most surreal Italian horror movie I have ever seen, and I have watched a lot of Italian horror. The Beyond features a superficial 'plot' about a haunted hotel which has a portal which leads to hell. Fulci himself said that the film is plotless and consists of a succession of unrelated horrific images. I don't think The Beyond is Fulci's best work, but it is definitely his most surreal. Some of the surreal sights in The Beyond include tarantula based mayhem, flesh hungry zombies, the crucifixion of a Satanist, a nasty dog attack in which a throat is ripped out and at the end, our hero and heroine descend into a bleak landscape which could be hell - and disappear. The gore in the film was obviously done on the cheap, but it is effective. It is a harmless way to spend 90 minutes of your time, especially if you like your surrealism with dollops of horror - Fulci does not disappoint on both fronts.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
