As the library of tragic stories of substance misuse, addiction and spiralling behaviour attest, being an actor - or anyone famous - can come with some serious caveats. The adulation and public affection are obviously a nice bonus, but there's stress to be had in pretending to be other people all the time and putting your body and mind through transformations that can leave marks.

Occasionally, substance abuse and acting cross-over in more tangible ways, as actors seek to improve their method by partaking in something transformative themselves. After all, there's a fair number of movies out there that show drug use in all of its grim glory - it's one of those volatile human behaviours that inspires truly compelling stories.

And while the drug culture in modern movie-making isn't quite as vibrant as it was back in the 1960s and 70s, it's still there and it still impacts movies in very real ways. It's probably also just hidden a lot better these days.

Sometimes, the drug use ends up out in the open - mostly because somebody admits it in retrospect - and that makes rewatching the scenes you know were filmed under the influence all the more intriguing. And you may be surprised by some of the actors who admit to having been high while making films.
