I am a great believer in giving the public what it wants. After the crazy success of the first article that I wrote for this site about depraved films, I realised that I was not alone in my love for everything despicable. There were fellow film watching delinquents who were transfixed by what I would call “The World of Transgressive Cinema.”
And transgressive cinema usually means a bit of depravity. Not to everyone’s tastes admittedly, but widely sought after in some circles – horror film fans, giallo fans, arthouse fans, Eurotrash fans, Japanese and Hong Kong film lovers. Yes, there is a large percentage of us who share a love of extreme cinema.
Even if I find some of these films despicable, I still enjoy writing about them, and I love a good old debate about to follow with regards to the most depraved films in cinema history. It is a fascinating subject and I will keep bringing you depraved film upon depraved film until you are so morally outraged you hang me in effigy!
Mwah ha ha!

I’ve seen a whopping 3/10 on the list. Absolutely hated Mordum; probably the worst film I have ever seen. That or Keith Lemon: The Film.
I think Keith Lemon is the most hideous, vulgar comedian ever. I can’t imagine sitting through a movie about him. I think i would die
Are you a fan of the Cinema Snob?
I dont even know what that is.
An Internet celebrity i guess, who does reviews in the guise of a film critic mostly reviewing old horror and exploitation films. A lot of the films mentioned by you have been reviewed or referenced by him at some point. Big fan of Italian Horror, Think you may enjoy.
Cool, I will check him out! Thanks for the tip!
I must be the only one that really loves Salo.
A few more movies worth adding are Nacho Cerda’s Aftermath and Karim Hussein’s Subconscious cruelty. I have yet to see a film with necrophilia as the subject that comes even remotely close to how gross Aftermath is. And Subconscious Cruelty…you see Jesus anally raped by naked women who then force him to eat his own flesh.
Also, the unrated version of Murder Set Pieces is pretty nasty and depraved, but after watching it with the commentary, it became obvious that the director is just a misogynistic douche.
It’s not that I dislike salo, it’s just I find it so hard to watch, I cant sit through it that often. But as I said in the article, i do think that it is of artistic merit and it is a very relevant film
Good! Good! Good! More titles for lil old me!
Also, to give you an idea on Murder Set Pieces. Back in 2005 I went to a horror convention in Chicago. Cerina Vincent was there and I asked her to sign my copy of Murder Set Pieces as she was in it (briefly). She refused to sign it alleging that the director never told her what the movie was really about and that they lied to her in regards to the content. After spending 10 minutes arguing with her and telling her that if she didn’t sign it, she’d be out $20, she reluctantly agreed.
She was embarrassed. If I was an actress I would be shouting my horror credentials to the roof top! I wanna be a scream queen!
Does Caligula deserve a spot?
It will make it onto the next list :-D
Japanese movies alone would fill this list.
What goes in those depraved guys heads, i may never know.
Ha ha ha! Youre dead on! I could compile about 6/7 ‘Most Depraved’ lists filled purely with films from our Nippon friends!
Also recommended are Slaughtered Vomit Dolls, Begotten (might belong more in the “weird” section), Singapore Sling, Cannibal (the German film) and I’m sure I’ll think of more.
I’ve always wanted to see Slaughtered Vomit Dolls. The title is such a come on
Love your articles, how about Cutthroats 9? sickie spaghetti western
Hey charlie!
Cutthroats 9! Cutthroats 9! I love that little film! It will be on my next list i assure you! Thanks for reminding me!
Fun fact: I met Fred Vogel (owner of Toetag Pictures, director of the August Underground films) about 7 or 8 years ago. He is the nicest guy ever. It’s weird after seeing the characters that he plays in those films and then meeting him in person. Could not have met a more down to earth person than him.
Still waters run deep…. I am a perfectly nice person, no one would guess my erm, filmic perversions
The director mostly made the AU films as a way to devalue serial killers. I couldn’t finish August Underground but it’s the exact opposite of something like Natural Born Killers. Just pure ugliness and evil.
Fred also made the awesome zombie/war drama Sella Turcica starring Camille Keaton from I Spit On Your Grave.
Salo only being #7 on this list is kinda disturbing
It didnt even make it onto the first batch of depraved films back in January!
