10 Most Divisive Movies Of 2019
10. Aladdin
All three of Disney's live-action remakes released this year proved divisive with audiences - resulting in Dumbo tanking at the box office and The Lion King sparking a debate about photorealistic CGI - though none more so than Guy Ritchie's Aladdin.
As evidenced by Aladdin's billion-dollar success at the box office, the remake clearly delivered the nostalgic goods to a point, even if many others felt that it was ultimately emblematic of soulless, cynical Hollywood rehashing its old hit properties for another dip into audience's wallets.
Though Will Smith's Genie was certainly more entertaining than the wretched marketing suggested and the script brought a few welcome feminist revisions to the table, for some the spectacle was just too empty, too lazy, and too awash in plastic, unconvincing CGI.
There's sure to be a generation of youngsters who will consider this their Aladdin, and while many found Ritchie's film to be a solidly entertaining update, just as many found it low-effort and effectively pointless.
There's something most of us can agree on, though: the new Jafar (Marwan Kenzari) was terrible.
