10 Most Horrifying Changes Of Animated Characters To Live-Action

9. Popeye (Popeye)

Look, obviously, we all love Robin Williams. The man was a genuine treasure, God rest his soul. But his role in the live-action Popeye film from 1980 was misguided, to say the least.

In animated form, Popeye's design is a friendly and welcoming sign. He's dressed in cartoonishly sailor garb, with an overall scrawny body, excepting his comically exaggerate forearms. His design had much more in common with the long and lanky design of his love interest, Olive, than it did with the overtly masculine and purposefully farcical designs of a character the antagonistic Bluto.

This design made it all the more satisfying when Popeye would inevitably bust out his can of spinach and use this burst of strength to defeat the towering brutes that stood in his way. However, the live-action version of Popeye misses out on all of this nuance entirely.

It's as if the production team behind the live-action Popeye just figured making Robin Williams look gruff and buff in a sailor's outfit and giving him laughably bad oversized forearms would be enough. It's a poor call, especially considering what a wonderful performance Williams is at least attempting to give through the make-up.
