10. The Magic Pencil - The Dark Knight

Joker Pencil The moment that really confirmed the Joker's casual, swaggering villainy in The Dark Knight, as the colourfully-clad clown criminal announced himself with some impact to the collected crime bosses of Gotham City. Challenged on his claim to effectively being the answer to all of their Bat-shaped problems, the Joker's almost comical response is to offer a magic trick, and proceeds to make a pencil disappear by slamming a henchman's head on to it. It's not just the sudden, sharp shock of the violence that makes this so profoundly affecting, it's the almost complete lack of emotional response from the Joker. Heath Ledger plays him without the explosive anger that other villains might bring to such a display of power, never wavering from his commitment to the odd-ball detachment that made that performance so phenomenally eye-catching. That is far cleverer even than Hopkins' take on Hannibal Lecter. http://youtu.be/2KX3OriDpgg
