Spotlight was the Best Picture winner of 2015, and critics adore this film which takes a look at the journalists that uncovered the child molestation cover-ups by the Catholic Church. It’s got a fantastic ensemble cast, with Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and Amy Adams all delivering excellent performances, and the film tackled the responsibility of the news to report on corruption and scandal.

And it’s the most Oscar-bait film since The Artist.

Spotlight checks all the boxes: It’s a true story? Yep. About a faux-complex issue? Yep. It’s got scenes were the actors get to monologue for their awards nominations? Yep. Looking at the film cynically, it’s easy to see that it’s just begging for awards without putting anything interesting in there for the layman.

The film is agonisingly slow and tries to pose challenging questions that end up having extremely simple answers. Should the media report on scandals that hurt innocent people? Yes, of course. Is the Catholic church really culpable for the actions of their clergy? Yes, absolutely. Great films stick with you after watching - Spotlight is just Hollywood virtue signalling and not much else.
