Yeah, the Infinity Stones are cool, but they’re no McNuggets sauce...

Avengers Endgame has certainly taken the the world by storm. It’s grossed over $2 billion and has seen an outpouring of emotions online; some good, some bad, and some ugly.

A recent list tackled the most unexpected controversies, but this is approaching the reaction from a different angle. This is about strange fan reactions, but being strange doesn’t necessarily mean it’s controversial.

There’s also the fact that some of the controversy doesn’t really mimic how fans felt. Case in point: Fat Thor.

The overwhelming majority of Avengers fans loved Hemsworth‘ new take on the character, partly because of how well Hemsworth himself played it. We were never invited to laugh at Thor, despite the classic Marvel quips, and 99% of moviegoers seemed to appreciate this was a serious choice to show how much Thor has lost his purpose, and with it his self esteem.

It was only the pundits who seemed willing to pour scorn on his development.

So while that’s out, there’s still a boatload of weird and wonderful fan reactions to catalogue. Movies this big can sometimes push people to do crazy things, and Avengers: Endgame is one of the biggest movies around.

10. Flowers For Tony

There’s no doubt that it can be very emotional when your favourite movie character dies. Especially one we’ve grown to love as much as Tony Stark across the whole MCU, and given that he dies willingly to save the rest of the universe.

This though is a little bit much. Hong Kong theatre Lee Gardens in Causeway Bay ran an exhibit of Avengers figures alongside Endgame’s release, with models of the Avengers and Thanos on display outside a Marvel pop up shop.

The piece de resistance was a 7m tall statue of Iron Man in his signature superhero landing pose. Following the movie and his climatic death, a fan laid a bouquet of flowers at the figure’s feet.

It’s difficult to know how ridiculous this is without fully knowing the intent behind it; was this more of a light hearted joke, or a grief stricken fan paying genuine respects?

We’ll never know, but what we do know is Robert Downey Jnr’s legacy in the MCU will never be forgotten, no matter how long the franchise rolls on for. This isn’t the only ridiculous thing RDJ fans have done in the aftermath of Endgame either.
