8. Audition (1999)

The Movie: Takashi Miike is one of the most prolific directors in the business, but Audition is the movie he will always be remembered for. The film stars Ryo Ishibashi as a middle-aged widower who takes part in casting auditions designed to find him a new wife. He quickly falls for the beautiful Asami (Eihi Shiina), but things take a turn for the worse when she reveals her true nature.

The Scare: For the first half of the film, Audition appears to be a harmless if somewhat surreal comedy about a lonely man trying to find love. Then the bag scene happens. Aoyama (Ishibashi) rings Asami, who pretends that she has not been expecting his call, but in reality, she has been waiting by the phone for four days straight.

That's a little bit strange to say the least, but what makes this scene truly horrific is the large bag sitting behind Asami. As the phone rings, the bag suddenly moves, lunging across the room while making a bizarre guttural sound. At this point, viewers have no idea what is in the bag and that in itself makes the scare even more terrifying.

The scene is framed perfectly by Miike, who innocuously places the bag in the background of the shot and this moment has since become an iconic image of Japanese cinema. When we later discover that the bag contains a man who has had numerous body parts removed, the audience is shocked and appalled, but nothing compares to that initial feeling when we first see the bag move. The abrupt shift in tone is almost like a jump scare in itself.mullholland d
