10 Movie Fanbases That Are Extremely Irritating

9. Art-Film Snobs

The Tree of LifeWhat They Think: "If you don't like the latest Terrence Malick film, then you just didn't get it, OK?" Here's one that I find really irritating. I like to think of myself as a relatively eclectic film viewer; I enjoy artistic fare like The Tree of Life, but I'm also really looking forward to the next Fast and the Furious film. Still, art film fans at their worst are no better than those who mindlessly gorge themselves on vacuous blockbuster movies; they're shutting themselves off from an entire cachet of cinema, and at the same time come off as pompous and elitist. Case in point, take Terrence Malick's latest film, To the Wonder. I loathed it, finding it overwhelmingly pretentious (though that word is thoroughly overused, I will admit) and narratively sparse. While the film has its fans, it wasn't long before people started throwing around the accusations on IMDB and such that I didn't "get" the film because I didn't like it, and that apparently if I just understood it, then I would be completely in love with it. Condescending and horrifically patronising, it's basically someone defending a film by making the huge leap that you're an idiot for not liking it, rather than the fact that someone simply didn't engage with the film in the way that you did.
