10 Movie Heroes Who Were Actually Suffering A Nervous Breakdown

9. Captain Picard - Star Trek: First Contact

Something isn't quite right about Captain Picard in First Contact. He€™s gone from being the (mostly) calm and wise leader to an irrational, gun-toting lunatic. Before judging this as out of character though, it€™s important to look at his actions in context; The Borg have taken over his ship and are assimilating his crew, which is a touchy subject for him as he€™s still struggling with the memories of his own assimilation years before. When they arrive he€™s already suffering from PTSD, so having to face his literal worst nightmare tips him over the edge. His switch to action hero is motivated by stress and anger, with the blinding hatred for The Borg overriding all his other thoughts and driving him to extremes. Of course this isn€™t a healthy frame of mind and it affects his judgment throughout, only for him to realise how far he€™s gone in the famous Moby Dick scene. He€™s still the same man he was on The Next Generation; he just now has a lot of righteous fury to get out of his system.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
