10 Movie Maverick Cops Who Just Didn't Give A Damn

Rules? Who needs them?

Dirty Harry
Warner Bros.

Does anyone really think that writing reports, slapping wrists and eating doughnuts gets the job done?

Of course not. It's all about car chases, gunfights with non-standard issue weapons, police brutality and excessive use of force that's how you make the criminal world bow at your knees, making them beg for mercy and a jail cell.

Maybe that's not the way real world policing should go down (though apparently it does sometimes), but in movieland, we're made to believe that it's the mavericks who keep people safe, and not those damn pencil-pushers. And inevitably, cop movie history is littered with the kind of loose cannon anti-heroes you can really rely on to get sh*t done.

And these guys are the pick of the bunch...

10. Axel Foley - Beverly Hills Cop

Dirty Harry
Paramount Pictures

He might not be the most serious addition to this list, but Axel Foley arrives in Beverly Hills to find the policing there to be quite underperforming and so takes his own approach to the crimes that are important to him.

Foley uses humour as his main maverick tactic, playing with the minds of the Beverly Hills Officers, ordering them room service, sticking a banana in their car tailpipe, taking them to strip clubs.

Despite his silliness, Foley can get serious, taking his new found partners to assault a criminal's estate without authorization. It certainly isn't a laughing matter.
