What Everybody Thinks

Avengers: Infinity War's opening sequence sees The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) easily beaten by Thanos (Josh Brolin) and sent to Earth by a dying Heimdall (Idris Elba).

For the rest of the movie, Bruce Banner finds himself unable to call upon The Hulk, who violently resists in fashions both disturbing and hilarious.

And going by the online response to this subplot, the clear fan consensus was that The Hulk was scared of Thanos, and that in Avengers: Endgame he'd presumably find a way to conquer his fears for round two.

The Truth

While doing press for Infinity War's home video release, co-director Joe Russo confirmed that the Big Green Dude was not in fact afraid of the Mad Titan, and had an entirely different motivation for staying out of the fight.

Russo said, "We thought an interesting direction to take [The Hulk] in is what if Banner, who typically uses the Hulk to solve crisis situations, what if the Hulk were no longer interested in solving those problems for Banner?...People have speculated whether there was some fear on the Hulk's part about having to face Thanos again. But I think ultimately what it is, is that he's tired of playing hero to Bruce Banner."

That's certainly a more intriguing and multi-faceted reasoning than what most fans assumed, underlining the strained dichotomy of Banner and Hulk that is finally resolved in Endgame.

No round two though, sadly.
