10 Movie Villains Who Were Fatally Miscast

9. Julianne Moore - Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Julianne Moore is easily one of the finest American actresses working today and she very rarely gives even average performances, let alone bad ones, so this weak turn in Kingsman: The Golden Circle was a huge surprise and not a pleasant one.

This miscasting is an example of what happens quite a lot with blockbuster movie villains: a talented actor known for complex performances being stuck in the part of a cartoonish antagonist which just doesn't fit them. Julianne Moore is a performance known for rich, nuanced performances such as those in Far from Heaven, Magnolia and The Kids are All Right, not dumb blockbuster roles like this.

Moore just looks like she doesn't know what to do with the character and to be fair to her Poppy Adams was not a very well-realised villain, but this was never really going to work. Moore could've been OK if this character was a quieter, more sinister villain but with the hammy, more eccentric character that we got, a more flamboyant actress with more experience in blockbusters was needed.
