10 Movies From 2016 That Really Shouldn’t Have Been Boring

One of the rare times a movie would have been better without Wolverine.

Wolverine Weapon X
Fox

On the whole 2016 has been a good year for cinema. It gave us Arrival, Captain America: Civil War, Nocturnal Animals, and The Nice Guys and while it also gave us Dirty Grandpa and Grimsby, you can’t win them all.

Since we live in a time where everything is either the best or worst thing ever, we often overlook the middle ground; the dull or forgettable. These are the films that usually do well but fade quickly into the background, and people tend to forget about them when compiling their personal end of year lists.

In many cases these films have no right being boring, either because they have a great cast, a killer concept or explosions galore; maybe even a combination of all three. Even then they just kind of sit there, slowly lulling viewers into a comfortable nap before finally coming to an end.

Let’s take a look at some of those dullards, and explain why they had no right being so boring.

10. Inferno

Wolverine Weapon X
Columbia Pictures

Perhaps this one shouldn’t have been a major shock, given the original movie had such a complicated plot they had to stop and explain it with a PowerPoint presentation. Inferno at least promised to be crazier, with Tom Hanks’ professor trying to stop a doomsday virus while suffering hellish visions.

For the first twenty minutes it’s fairly gonzo and silly, with flashy camerawork and creepy hallucinations, but then the plot kicks in and gradually the audience feels sleepier and sleepier. Hanks and Felicity Jones’ sidekick run around various landmarks in Italy, some shadowy forces chase them and it’s all very, very dry.

Given the amount of craziness contained in Inferno there’s absolutely no excuse for it being so listless, with director Ron Howard treating it with the utmost seriousness despite the story being utter b-movie pulp.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
