10 Movies In 2017 That Killed The Wrong Character

9. Chris Vail (Jake Johnson) - The Mummy

The Death: Nick Morton's (Tom Cruise) glorified sidekick Chris Vail (Jake Johnson) becomes possessed by Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) after being bitten by a camel spider, forcing Nick to shoot him dead when he attacks the group on-board a plane.

Who Should've Died Instead: You've got a few options here. It's worth mentioning from the outset that Chris' death isn't actually the end for him in this movie. Rather, he shows up several times as a ghost, giving Nick advice and eventually being resurrected as Nick's zombie sidekick at the end of the movie.

But wouldn't the movie have been so much more entertaining if Jake Johnson was actually totally present throughout, rather than Annabelle Wallis' lame, poorly-acted love interest Jenny?

Yes, this is a Hollywood tentpole so they were never going to kill off the eye candy, but it nevertheless would've been so much more satisfying for Jenny to be the one killed earlier on.

Or better yet, as a compromise, why not simply have Courtney B. Vance's Colonel Greenway become possessed instead? He gets killed by Chris on the plane anyway, so it would be a pretty easy fix. That way the studio would get their Cruise-Wallis romance, but Johnson would still get to stick around as a fun third wheel and spruce things up a bit.
