10 Movies In 2017 That Should Have Flopped (But Didn't)

3. Flatliners

Box Office: $44.5 million

Everything about this year's remake of the 1990 cult classic thriller Flatliners had the desperate whiff of box office failure, especially the atrocious marketing and the fact that this was a movie practically nobody asked to be remade.

Still, the new Flatliners was far from the box office calamity it seemed destined to be, more-than-doubling its $19 million budget despite immense critical scorn.

Perhaps most surprising of all isn't that the movie actually made a profit, but that its budget-to-profit ratio of 2.34 is almost exactly that of the original movie (2.35). If the original can endure as an iconic film three decades later on such modest success, this version really didn't do too badly at all (though nobody's going to be talking about it in 2050, that's for sure).
