10 Movies Roger Ebert Loved That Everyone Else Hated

9. The Happening (3 stars)

The HappeningEbert Quote: "I suspect I'll be in the minority in praising this film. It will be described as empty, uneventful, meandering. But for some, it will weave a spell. It is a parable, yes, but it is also simply the story of these people and how their lives and existence have suddenly become problematic." Critical Consensus: 17% Ebert was certainly right in his assertion that he would be among the few defending The Happening, and that was what so great about him - he knew when he'd be fighting an uphill struggle, but did it anyway. He found some merit in M. Night Shyamalan's tale about the Earth fighting back and starting to kill off the human race, even if I and most other critics dismissed it as a risible, poorly acted pile of garbage. I can't make sense of Ebert's reasons personally, but I admire his singular approach.
