10 Movies That Could Dominate The 2016 Summer Box Office
Because 2015 is so next year...
Last Wednesday, Marvel Studios spilled the beans on the worst kept secret in their upcoming release schedule by officially confirming that Doctor Strange will make his bow on July 8, 2016. The film has already been the source of much speculation as audiences grow increasingly accustomed to contemplating releases a couple of years away and beyond. In 2017, Marvel have already earmarked May 5 and November 3 for two as yet unnamed projects, with a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel slotting in between, and reserved virtually the same dates for 2018. Warner Bros. have nine further films slated through 2020 to follow up Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and both Fox and Sony are looking far into the future to secure those all-important summer dates. Naturally, its not just comic book movie creators for whom its a necessity to look way, way ahead. Every major studio and franchise is now duty bound to scour distant calendars in order to find slots that they believe will be advantageous to maximising the earning potential of their most important properties. This summer saw numerous triumphs Guardians, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Godzilla but summer 2015 was long ago declared to be the blockbuster season to end them all. Its still huge we have Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, Terminator: Genisys and plenty more to look forward to but when Batman v Superman and Star Wars Episode VII were pushed back to 2016, it lost a little lustre. So what about summer 2016? If studios like Marvel can, as Kevin Feige has confessed, plan up to 2028 and beyond, we can certainly allow ourselves a glance at what well be enjoying, lauding and denouncing a couple of years from now. It wont surprise you to learn that a lot of big hitters are limbering up.
