10 Movies That Could Win Best Picture Next Year

4. The Light Between Oceans

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander are two of the most exciting young actors working today so the prospect of seeing the real-life couple on screen together is almost too good to pass up. They star as lighthouse owners who come upon a baby in the water and raise it as their own, only to discover a woman years later whom they believe to be the real mother. There's some powerful themes here and director Derek Cianfrance is absolutely able to execute them. After helming The Place Beyond The Pines and Blue Valentine, he€™s shown an adept ability to handle relationships and present them in a way that€™s harsh, yet hard to look away from. Thanks to the more friendly and less harrowing content of this film compared to his previous, it could be the one to break through for him and attain Oscar success. The biggest knock against this film being a major contender is its early September release date. It€™s not an immediate death sentence but it€™s always harder to keep a film in voters€™ minds when it doesn€™t come out closer to December. A push back of the release date would go a long way to solidifying this as a frontrunner to take home the big trophy.
