10 Movies They Keep Saying Will Be Made (That Never Will)

9. Bioshock

A good franchise can never really die, but for all the times we’ve heard that a Bioshock film is being made (and then isn’t), it feels safe to assume that Bioshock really and truly is dead. Based on the popular video game franchise of the same name, a Bioshock movie was at one point the toast of Hollywood. Back when blockbusters were being churned out with $200 million plus budgets every summer, the potential in bringing film audiences to the CGI-filled world of Rapture was immense – and then everything sunk quickly.

Originally, Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski was attached to direct, a film-director pairing that made so much sense that the movie coursed through pre-production quickly. In fact, the film was eight weeks away from shooting – with screen tests completed and concept art made - when all the plans were scrapped after Verbinski wouldn’t cave on the film’s R-rating.

Even after Verbinski’s version collapsed, a new Bioshock film was quickly promised and in 2010 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was tapped to direct it. Not that much long after he came on board, Fresnadillo left the project, saying that he’s “completely out of that, and developing other stuff.”

Which leaves the world of Bioshock in a slightly worse place than it was ten years ago when it originally went into production; at the bottom of the ocean with only the faintest hopes of ever resurfacing.

Jake Black writes the funny, weird, interesting things that you love reading. He's super cool, really famous, and everyone likes him. He's never once been punched in the face by Johnny Depp on a ferry traveling to Southampton, England.
