10 Nastiest Video Nasties

10. Bloody Moon (1981)

Miguel - a disturbed and disfigured young man gets locked up for killing a woman who spurned his advances. When he has finished doing time he goes to his sister Manuela who along with their frail, old aunt run a language academy in the Costa del Sol. Miguel had previously enjoyed an incestuous affair with Manuela, and he asks her if she wants to reignite it. Manuela says no. Angela is a sexy brunette student at the academy. Unfortunately, all of her friends are getting killed but nobody believes her. What's a girl to do? Bloody Moon is Jess Franco trying to do an American slasher movie. It has to be said that the film succeeds despite its flaws. There are obvious red herrings, the acting is weak and the dialogue is atrocious but the film works in spite of these limitations. This is because it features abundant nasty violence - a girl is stabbed with the blade exiting her nipple, another gets her head sawed off by an industrial chainsaw machine, on top of a brutal stabbing in the stomach and several strangulations. This was enough to get the authorities hot and bothered and it was sufficiently nasty to be successfully prosecuted for obscenity. It is all good clean gory fun, and considering Franco's normal style of movie making, he acquits himself in the slasher genre quite admirably. He does not rely on his famous zoom shots, the women in the film are attractive (despite the inane lines they spout) and the film has a well-crafted atmosphere. Franco has a few entries on the Video Nasty list but this was the nastiest one he produced. The less said of Devil Hunter the better...

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
