6. Annette Bening - Catwoman (Batman Returns)
Despite the fact that Michelle Pfeiffer pretty much defined the role of Catwoman in
Batman Returns, she wasn't actually the first actress hired to take on the part - that would be Annette Bening, perhaps best known for her roles in
American Beauty and
The Kids Are All Right, who was forced to drop out after she was hired due to pregnancy. And though she might not have ruined
Returns, I don't think she was the best choice - in this version, anyway. The way that Pfeiffer plays the character is all about the sex appeal, and it's part of what makes
Batman Returns so fun to watch. I'm not sure that Bening, though an undeniably great actress, would have been able to pull it off quite so successfully as Pfeiffer manages. That's not to say that she'd have have sucked in the part, either, because she obviously got hired for a reason. But Pfieffer's seductiveness is great here - it's hard to imagine anyone else in the part.
