The Theory

When Captain America (Chris Evans) manages to hold back Thanos' (Josh Brolin) Infinity Gauntlet-wearing hand, it's not just because he's insanely strong - it's because Cap is actually capable of wielding the Gauntlet and withstanding its immense, human-liquefying power.

Some even went as far as to suggest that this was the Gauntlet actively recognising Steve's strength and worthiness and responding accordingly, hence the incredulous expression on the Mad Titan's face as Steve (and the Gauntlet) pushes back.

How It Was Debunked

Shortly after the release of Avengers: Endgame, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely promptly rubbished the theory in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Markus said, "I think Steve would be toast. I think in that moment, Thanos is impressed by Steve's will. He's like, 'I can't believe this guy who apparently has no powers is trying this.' He's almost like, 'Really? Really?'"

There you have it. A nice idea, sure, but having Cap handle Mjolnir is probably enough awesome Steve Rogers fan service for one movie saga, no?
