This month, readers of Empire Magazine may have noticed something unusual about the perennially popular movie magazine: there's a woman on the cover. Yes, Jennifer Lawrence has been placed front and centre as the star of the upcoming Hunger Games: Catching Fire. So why's this such a big deal? Well, over the course of the last decade, Empire's only other solo female covers have featured Noomi Rapace for Prometheus in May 2012, Megan Fox for the "Hot Issue" in May 2009, and Uma Thurman for both Kill Bill volumes in April 2004 and November 2003. While it would be nice to see a little positive discrimination from the nation's favourite movie magazine, this huge gender imbalance isn't exactly their fault, but merely a reflection of the fact that the vast majority of blockbuster movies that score magazine covers are male-orientated. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a perfect example of this trait: this franchise has spawned 10 movies, either released or currently in production, 8 solo male leads and 2 ensembles (Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy), all of which feature very few "main" female roles. Still, Lawrence and Katniss featuring front and centre is encouraging in terms of the potential for more female-led blockbuster franchises, so let's take a look at 10 other possibilities from the worlds of novels, comics, games and TV that we might glimpse at some point in the future...
