10 Predictions For The Future of Cinema

6. €But Audiences Are Getting Smarter. Or At Least More Aware Of Their Influence And Less Tolerant of Trash

We only need to look at the success of films like 'Inception', 'Prometheus' (steady€) and 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' to see this. They may not appeal to everyone, but they don€™t talk down to an audience like 'Battleship' or 'Transformers' do. They may be flawed, but they throw out big, brave ideas. It€™s heartening to see original concepts like €˜Looper€™ being backed by the major studios (mostly because of the star power behind it, it seems, but still€), but such original projects will be harder to come by from the studios, meaning unless we start showing the studios we want films that don€™t insult our intelligence but are brave, bold and though we may not always like them, are clearly made with love (stand up, The Dark Knight Trilogy!). It seems audiences are only starting to wake up to the fact that we are in total control of what films the studios make. If we go to crap, they will make more crap. Cinema is dumbing down because we go to so many dumb films- you can€™t completely place the blame on the studios. I€™ll admit, I€™ve been to see my fair share of dreadful films so I am no angel, but they will stop making 3D films based on a toy you vaguely remember from 20 years ago with no creative passion or vision behind it if we only refuse to watch them. After all, who doesn€™t love indulging in a bit of Schadenfreude and watching another potential franchise-starter starring Taylor Kitsch flop spectacularly? Things are already looking up, let€™s keep it going!
