10 Reasons Why 2013 Is A Seminal Year For Sci-Fi Films

10. After EarthAfterEarth Will Smith and his real-life son Jaden play a father and son whose spacecraft crash lands on a future Earth which has been evacuated by humans over 1,000 years prior. With his father injured in the craft, Jaden's character must trek out into the unchecked wilderness to recover their rescue beacon. Why We Are Excited: Though M. Night Shyamalan's recent track record as a director leaves something to be desired, the premise of this project and some of the other talent involved give me hope. The screenplay (an original - the first in many original scripts on this list) was written by Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana), and Will Smith is one of the most reliable and watchable actors working today. Though Jaden has yet to prove himself, putting him through a post-apocalyptic setting should lead to some exhilarating, thrilling sequences. Let's just home Shyamalan doesn't ruin it all with a big twist in the third act!
